Beauty YouTuber James Charles has lost two million subscribers after a video was posted by his former friend Tati Westbrook.
The 19-year-old vlogger from New York has been accused of “manipulating people’s sexuality” and previously caused controversy for charging fans up to $500 (£385) to see him on tour.
So far James Charles has seen his subscriber count drop from 16.5 million on Monday to 14.5 million, according to the website Social Blade.
He has become the first ever YouTube personality to lose one million subscribers in 24 hours, with the biggest drop taking place on Saturday after his involvement in a row with fellow beauty vlogger Tati Westbrook.
The pair have previously worked together and have been friends for several years, with Charles attending Westbrook’s wedding and doing her makeup for the day.
On Friday, she released a 43-minute video accusing him of being disloyal after he promoted a rival hair product to one she had created.
Westbrook addressed the issues she had with him doing the advert before going into detail about his “problematic behaviour”.
In the video titled “Bye Sister”, which has received 24.4m views, she said: “You are using your fame, power and money to play with people’s emotions.”
She also accused him of “manipulating people’s sexuality,” adding: “You are using you fame, power and money to play with people’s emotions.
“You’re threatening to ruin them and embarrass them, and you’re doing that to have them behave sexually in your favour even if they’re straight?
“That behaviour is not okay if you’re a woman a man, gay, straight, bi, whatever sexual orientation you are, that is your personal call and it is not someone else’s to take, not someone else’s to play with.”
Charles, who has an estimated worth of $12m (£9m), has since released a video in which he apologises directly to Westbook, her husband and his fans.
He said: “I hate knowing that I disappointed not only [my fans], but two people that have been role models for me doing this.
“What sucks the most is that I know there’s nothing I can say or do to ever earn that friendship or trust back but I don’t blame them for it.”
Charles, who began his make-up focused YouTube channel in 2015, has since been unfollowed by Kylie Jenner on Instagram and has been accused of privately messaging Zara Larsson’s boyfriend.
The Swedish singer shared a clip of Westbrook’s video on Twitter, telling her followers: “I’m cackling cause he hit up my boyfriend in the DMs several times knowing damn well he’s straight.”
