The Search Engine Optimization Game Is Getting Tricky

For more than 4 years now I have been modifying my work from home based web sites trying to optimize for the major search engines, Especially Goggle. Today with much disappointment I have come to the realization that search engine traffic alone will not make me rich. Yes my search engine rankings are now worse today than when I started 4 years ago.

Google is constantly changing their algorithms which may or may not benefit your web site. In my case it appears it does not. And then there is Yahoo and MSN search on the horizon. It shows these 2 are beginning to take away valuable customers from Google. Although this is not necassarily a bad thing we now need to optimize for 3 search engines instead of 1. Back in the good old days if you had a number 1 ranking on Google for work from home (the holly grail of search terms) you also had a number 1 on Yahoo and MSN for work from home. Today that is not the case.

I have always been reading other people saying not to place all your chips on Google and expect to make it big time. Today I realize how correct they were. I still optimize for search engines this will never change. But in addition to search engine optimization other advertising methods must be used if you want to make it on the internet big time.

If you have the money paying for placement is not a bad idea. Google has its very popular ad words program which for a price will place your website link in an ad box down the right hand side of the search results. And Yahoo has Overture search results which are placed above the natural search results. But you will need to be in the top 3 for your link to show up because Yahoo only shows 3 sponsored listings on top of the natural listings. You can also use some smaller pay per click engines such as Findwhat, 7Search and Kanoodle to name just a few.

Gaining in popularity and very effective is writing and submitting press releases. If you write a good press release with your target URL in it you could potentially get 1,000's of visitors from just 1 press release. Press releases are also showing up in the news search results of Yahoo and Google. This can not hurt your search engine optimization efforts either. The most popular place for information on press releases and getting your release published is http://www.prweb.com . For a small fee of $ 30 you can guarantee a next day listing and submission of your press release to Yahoo, Google and many other engines.

People have been raving about writing articles for a long time now. Do they work? Of coarse they do. Why do you think I take the time to write articles? It's difficult at first if you are not into writing, but writing articles can help your search engine rankings if you can incorporate your website and then submit it to as many article directories as you can find. Also make sure you add all your articles to your own web site. This adds content to your site that hopefully you visitors will want to read.

There are literally hundreds more options for you to advertise your website both online and offline that I am not going to get into this article. The main point is not put all your eggs into one basket like I did (GOOGLE) Spread them out advertise everywhere and do not count on a good search engine ranking. If you do everything else right the search engines will look after your sit for you.

Once you find a site that interests you, establish your presence by signing up and filling in the questions for your profile and site home page. Once that is done, you are ready to interact.

Whom To Interact With

The people you want to associate with (ie make "friends" or be "connected" to) will depend greatly on your goals. There are several types of people you will want to consider contacting. Each can help you in different ways, so consider looking for more than one type of "target friend:"

Customers and Consumers: People who will benefit from what you do, consume or buy your products or services, and rave about you to their friends

Others Within Your Industry: People with you you can network, share resources and cross-promote with.

Media and Publishers: People who work for or can influence publications you would like to be mentioned in (e-zines, newspapers, Websites, etc).

Consultants: People who may want to hire or purchase products from you.

Event, Company or Organization representatives: People who operate business and associations that support your industry.

How To Find Friends

A few people will find you based on your profile, but you will want to actively seek out quality friends. You can start to find friends by joining groups related to your expertise, that have members who match your target friend profile or interest you in general. You can also approach individuals and ask them to become a friend and / or part of your network.

It was Friday night. I finished reading a book about RSS feeds. Quickly set up one for my site, submitted it on directories and went to bed.

Sunday morning, I noticed a sale. Idly, I scanned my logs to see where the buyer had found me.

It was from Yahoo! Now that may not seem surprising, except… I had not been listed in Yahoo! before.

Curious, I did a Yahoo! Search for my domain name… and almost fainted in shock! There were 123 of my pages listed – many of them in the top 10 ranks on my best keywords.

My RSS feed had been listed within 48 hours – and since my other pages were linked from it, they had all been indexed by Yahoo! just as quickly. And for free!

Since then I have heard many others share similar experiences. It is no fluke. RSS is H-O-T. And search engines LOVE it.

So what is RSS? An acronym for Really Simple Syndication, it is a web language format designed to help syndicate content across different sources.

RSS has been around for more than 10 years but has only recently become popular. RSS feeds provide headlines and summaries of information in a concise and standardized way.

The rise in RSS popularity, specially among marketers, has many reasons. Email filters and new legislation have lowered the effectiveness of email marketing. Content syndication in many different ways is gathering momentum. And fresh, frequently updated content is the very essence of the Web.

How can you use RSS feeds in your marketing? Is there a way to turn RSS feeds into profits?

Absolutely. Here are some ideas:

  1. Beat email filters. Ask your subscribers, prospects and clients to sign up to your RSS feed along with your email newsletter. If the ezine gets blocked, they’ll still get your RSS feed.

Other directories make use of software to determine the quality of the sites. That is less useful that the method used in the Dmoz Directory.

Article Directories

Article directories are sites that contain only articles. Some of them targeted to a specific category. You may find article directories that contain only sport related articles, business articles and so on. General directories contain articles on almost anything. If you are looking for articles, it’s better to search for article directories and then search for articles within the directory.

Newsletters and Ecourses

You can find these useful too. These are also known as online magazines. First you choose a newsletter that interest you, then you optin to receive the news or information. The information is sent to you via email, and you can optout anytime. Ecourses are more or less very similar

to newsletter.

Search for your favorite newsletter in Google. For example type in golf newsletter and simple follow the instructions on the site to optin. Finding images

Yahoo images section on the Yahoo home page give the best results. Google images show less results when you compare them. I suggest you use Yahoo images if you are searching for images.

Videos

YouTube is by now popular more or less by everyone that uses the Internet. You need to watch videos? Check youtube.com website. Google Videos and Yahoo Videos both offer a free service like Youtube, so you can watch, share and find videos on the Internet.

How Do I Advertise With Dogpile?

Answering the question “How do I advertise with Dogpile?” may not be direct. Dogpile is part of a family of search engines that use the Metasearch technology that was developed by Infospace. Metasearch uses the results of several search engines to find the top ranking unique sites from each of them. The bad news is that there is no way to advertise directly with Dogpile or any Metasearch powered site. The solution however may delight you if you already know how to rank in Google, Yahoo, Bing and/or Ask.

Dogpile results display in a similar way to other search engines with one key difference. Dogpile does not highlight sponsored (Pay-Per-Click) advertisements. Instead it displays the sponsored links (usually the first three) with a label like “Sponsored Ads by Google” (or Yahoo, or Ask etc.). Then the natural results are displayed with labels that denote their origin (i.e. “Found on Yahoo” or “Found on Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Ask”). Although Infospace claims that Metasearch looks for unique results I have experienced that in the sponsored list it seems to list the highest bid advertisements regardless of uniqueness. I have seen the exact same advertisement listed twice, once for “Sponsored Ads by Google”, and once for “Sponsored Ads by Yahoo”. The natural results, however, seem to be unique.

The solution to the question “How do I advertise with Dogpile?” is to be a very successful advertiser with the other search engines. You will want your Pay-Per-Click advertising to rank very high with whichever search engine you choose to use. On campaigns that you want to rank in Dogpile it may be necessary to monitor the bids across the big four Google, Yahoo, Bing, and Ask. The other solution is to learn SEO (Search Engine Optimization). SEO will allow you to rank in all of the big four search engines natural results allowing you to immediately rank in Dogpile.

How To Become A Data-Feed Super Affiliate

I am not going to describe what a product feed (or a data-feed) is. There is a lot of information out there about how to use one to build sites. Instead, I want to talk about how you can actually make more sales with data-feed sites.

The program that I manage offers a product feed, and I get a chance to see a sad picture of many good affiliates wasting their potential.

Here is my advice from the affiliate manager’s perspective.

Whenever you join (or think bout joining) a program, you need to look for two things:

– Temporary or permanent opportunities

– Flaws of a merchant

Here is an example of an opportunity that was created by an outside factor.

Recently, we got removed from the Yahoo index because of a penalty. I have no idea when (or if) we will get included back in, but I do know that it makes one decision much easier for our affiliates.

Judging by the numerous posts on various SEO-related message boards, it looks like Google and Yahoo use very different algorithms to rank pages. So for any given site, you have a choice to make. You can optimize for Yahoo, for Google, or for both.

Since Yahoo and Google use different algorithms, it is going to be hard to optimize the same set of pages for both of those engines at the same time, unless you employ heavy cloaking. And the way I see it, for an affiliate, it is better to appear high on one search engine than to appear low on both of them in an attempt to optimize for different algorithms at the same time.

Imagine that you are one of our affiliates. Given the information I just told you, shouldn’t you concentrate on Yahoo for that data-feed site that is being used to promote our products?

Why spend (at least) half of your time and resources on optimizing for Google when you know that we are nowhere to be found in Yahoo?

You have to have an extremely well linked and optimized site to get ahead of the merchant for the exact product-name search terms. The merchant is your biggest obstacle when it comes to the search engine traffic. So if there is a route that lets you get around that obstacle – take it!

Most of our well-performing affiliates did just that. Either intentionally or unintentionally, they ended up making much more money by appearing high in Yahoo results, while not being ranked high in Google.

So on a practical side of things, here is what you should do.

For your existing merchants, check if they are removed from the index in any of the major search engines, and if they are, then start reading and implementing SEO tips for that particular engine.

And if you are thinking about joining a program and can’t decide between several merchants, then check if any of them is not in the index of either Yahoo or Google. If you find a merchant like that – drop everything else you are doing and jump on that program.

As far as theory goes, this was just a simple, but specific example of what you should look for to make your efforts pay off. There are many different opportunities to get ahead in existing programs with data-feed sites; you just have to look for them.

Now, let’s talk about flaws of merchants and how you can exploit them to make more money and help consumers at the same time.

I will give another specific example, but you should be able to apply this concept to many different programs.

Our site has one huge structural flaw: we only list products by product-oriented categories.

In other words, there is no way to navigate our site by a specific occasion or by the purchasing intent of a visitor.

You can follow a path like:

widgets -> wooden widgets -> red wooden widgets

This setup works fine for some type of shoppers, but is a complete turn-off for others.

And the problem is that most affiliates simply mirror the catalog structure of a merchant according to their feed.

But if you structured your site to list widgets as:

– widgets for birthdays

– widgets for girlfriends

– widgets for those who are over 50

– the Independence Day widgets etc.

then you would attract different type of shoppers. You would no longer compete with the merchant, but instead you would complement them.

A visitor who is looking for a gift for his 50-something friend and has no idea that a red wooden widget would be perfect, will not travel down the path laid out by our catalog. So if he gets to our home page, we simply lose a sale. And if your data-feed-based site follows the same structure – you lose as sale as well.

Also, since the visitor does not know that he really wants a red wooden widget, he we not use those keywords while searching for a present on the search engines.

But if you attracted that visitor to your site, presented him with ideas for older friends’ birthday gifts and guided him to that specific widget’s page – then we would make a sale, you would make a commission, and the visitor (turned customer) would get his present with much less searching around. Everyone wins.

Such approach takes more work than simply cloning the merchant’s site with a feed, but affiliates who actually do something to complement merchant instead competing with them make a lot more money. After all, if you create a copy of a merchant’s site – you are not only competing with the merchant, you are also competing with all of their affiliates that use the same feed in the same way.
