Six pros on ManUtd’s cut list – Solskjaer wants English core of Sancho, Rice & Co.

“Times” reports

According to a report by “Times,” at Manchester United, the first major squad upheaval since 2015- carried out by Louis van Gaal at the time – is in the works. Head Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to have a list, with up to six players on it who he doesn’t want in the squad anymore. All of them are legionnaires who are 29 or older. In the meantime, the focus for new additions is on young Englishmen.

“Ole is at the Wheel,” the club announced when finally giving the coach the three year contract extension. Defenders Marcos Rojo (29) and Matteo Darmian (29) are to be sold, while Antonio Valencia’s contract (33) will not be renewed. Negotiations with Spaniards Juan Mata (30) and Ander Herrera (29) have been going on for 18 months to no avail. Now the midfielders will leave in the summer on free transfers (all expiring contracts). Herrera is said to have already agreed on a transfer to PSG.

Solskjaer has yet to decide whether transfer flop Alexis Sánchez (30) will also have to leave. Moreover, it will not be easy to find a taker for the Premier League’s highest-paid professional, who has only been able to score one goal this season.

While the separation from this sextet would be felt in the salary structure rather than in the transfer balance, the players on Solskjaer’s wish list are likely to cost the club hundreds of millions of euros. “Times,” named Jadon Sancho (19, BVB), Callum Hudson-Odoi (18, Chelsea), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (21, Crystal Palace) and Declan Rice (20, West Ham), four homegrown talents, as big transfer targets. This “English Core” is intended to close the gap with Manchester City and Liverpool FC. Like in the golden years under Sir Alex Ferguson – who also coached Solskjaer as a Player – the club wants to focus more on Englishmen again.

For this quartet alone, fees are likely to be around the 250 million mark. The signings of the two other professionals listed by the “Times” would also be similarly costly: Raphaël Varane (25, Real Madrid) and Saúl NÍguez (24) – two who are said to want to transfer. The richest club in the World could embarked on a shopping trip of this magnitude, only if the players and club do not keep denying the offers. This was most recently the case under José Mourinho, who often complained about his circumstance at the start of the season.
