Real Madrid ‘eye Raheem Sterling as part of £300m summer rebuild’ but Manchester City are reluctant to sell
- Real Madrid are expected to spend big this summer after a disappointing season
- Raheem Sterling is among the players said to be on Zinedine Zidane’s watch-list
- England international Sterling is under contract at Manchester City until 2023
Zidane left Real after guiding them to a third consecutive European crown last May, but when he returned to the Bernabeu earlier this month he inherited a team in desperate need of renovation.
Real are 12 points off the summit in La Liga and already out of both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.
Raheem Sterling, seen in Manchester City training on Friday, is being linked with Real Madrid
Zinedine Zidane returned to Real this week and is set to be given a big summer transfer budget
According to The Mirror, Real are preparing to go on a £300million-plus spending spree and Sterling is being tracked along with fellow targets Neymar, Eden Hazard and Christian Eriksen.
City will be reluctant to part with Sterling, who has provided 15 goals and nine assists in 27 Premier League games this season.
And the English champions have Sterling under contract until 2023 after the former Liverpool winger penned a new deal worth up to £300,000 a week in November.
Sterling, now 24, has been on Zidane’s watch-list for some time.
In 2015, when the England international was still on the books at former club Liverpool, Zidane, who was managing Real’s B-team, said: ‘We know who Raheem Sterling is, and of course we are monitoring him as a player.
‘There are very few players in the world who can improve the Real Madrid squad, so it is going to make sense we monitor the progress of the best young players in the world.’
City will not want to lose Sterling, whose £300,000-a-week contract is due to expire in 2023
