Ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday extolled the late former president, Shehu Shagari’s function in Nigeria’s pre- and post-independence politics.

Obasanjo gave the eulogy in a condolence letter addressed to Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state,  a duplicate of which was made accessible to newsmen in Abeokuta.

He described late Shagari as a humble, patriotic, amiable and notable Nigerian chief.

Obasanjo expressed his deep respect for the achievements of the late Shagari in the midst of his lengthy life, describing him as one of many principal actors in Nigeria’s pre-independence and post-independence politics.

“It’s with a heavy coronary heart that I’m writing to say how deeply grieved I used to be to listen to of the loss of life of His Excellency, President Shehu Usman Shagari.

“On behalf of my household and by myself behalf, I want to commiserate with you, your complete members of his household and the great individuals of Sokoto State over the passing of this humble, patriotic, amiable and notable Nigerian chief.

“He held varied positions as a parliamentarian within the Federal Home of Representatives representing Sokoto West in 1954, as a Parliamentarian Secretary 1958-1959, as a Federal Minister and Commissioner in numerous ministries and capacities between 1959 and 1975.

“I bear in mind his function as Commissioner for Finance, whereas he and I served within the authorities of Common Yakubu Gowon. He was thorough.

“And later, I noticed him as my successor in authorities as a democratically-elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria between 1979 and 1983.

“In all his nationwide assignments, he was forthright, devoted and confirmed nice dedication within the discharge of his duties.

“He was a unifying power for the nation and his contribution to the expansion and growth of democracy in Nigeria can’t simply be forgotten.

“In all conditions, he lived nobly and he died in the Aristocracy.

“President Shagari died at a time the nation and its management is in dire want of such management, expertise and knowledge to deal with the multi-faceted challenges dealing with the nation.

“Whereas expressing our sympathies to you, the household of the deceased and the federal government and other people of Sokoto State, we pray the Almighty Allah grant him everlasting relaxation and provides consolation to all these he left behind,” Obasanjo mentioned. (NAN)
