A Nongovernmental Organisation United Nations Women Programme on Women Peace and Security in Nigeria has urged the Bauchi state 9th Assembly to make gender mainstreaming laws that will provide equality of opportunity between women and men in the state.
Mr Peter Mancha the Programme Specialist UN women peace and Security made the call at a one day capacity building workshop for the state 9th Assembly members and stakeholders in Bauchi on Thursday.
He said the essence of the capacity building was to enhance their capacity on gender and related concept on International frameworks for gender equality .
Mancha charged the legislatolators to give priority and ensures gender mainstreaming in making law and legislative for higher quality.
“That also has greater relevance for society, because it makes policies respond more effectively to the needs of all citizens – women and men, girls and boys,” he said.
According to him, gender mainstreaming has been embraced across the globe as a way of realising gender equality.
“It means to purposefully consider the perspective of both male and female people during the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation elements of policies, regulatory measures, and spending programmes.
“By doing this, there is a view of increasing equality between men and women, helping to reduce discrimination,” he said
In his remark, the speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly Alhaji Abubakar Suleiman has commended UN Women for building the capacity of legislators and promoting Women, Peace and Security in the State.
He explained that peace and security of women is a very important issue that needs to be discussed because women are first victims of wars and conflicts.
“During wars and conflicts, women suffer a lot because when their husbands are killed they will be helpless therefore they need serious attention from the society.
“The workshop comes at the right time and I commend the organizers” he said.
The Speaker urged the participants to make use of all they will learn at the workshop in order to improve their legislative interventions on women empowerment in the state.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that UN Women, Peace and Security organized a capacity building workshop for Bauchi state 9th Assembly with the support of Norwegian Government on understanding gender, women, peace and security normative framework, domestication of Women, Peace and Security (WPS) in Nigeria.
