5 Points Above Relegation
AS Monaco was forced to be Europe’s most active top team this winter transfer window. Nine players left the club – which has been a relegation candidate in Ligue 1 – and eight new players were added. In addition, Coach Leonardo Jardim returned just three and a half months after his release. Since taking office on January 27th, the club has undergone a metamorphosis.
Jardim’s team scored ten points in their last four league games, putting them second in the form table during this time period, just behind Stade Reims (to form table). In their last match the team managed a 2:0 win over Olympique Lyon. The coach stated to “L ‘Équipe,” “Lyon are a high-class team, they’ve already proven that against Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain this season. We had the right attitude, but also a high quality in our game.”
The impact player was once again Gelson Martins (23, photo), who scored the decisive goal. Since the Portuguese winger came on loan from Atlético Madrid, he has contributed three goals and three assists in five games. After beating Lyon, AS Monaco now has 25 points, the gap from relegation places is already five points (to the table).
