100 Million Euro Exit Clause
33 scorer points in 39 games: No midfielder has been more dangerous this season than Bruno Fernandes (photo) of Sporting CP. As the Portuguese sports daily “A Bola” reports, the 24-year-old has played his way into Manchester United’s attention with his performances. The “Red Devils” are said to have already made contact with the player’s consultant agency (POSITIONUMBER).
The “Red Devils” want to reach an early agreement for a summer transfer, thereby beating out other interested parties such as Chelsea FC, Liverpool FC and AC Milan. To accomplish this, a representative of the club intends to meet with Lisbon officials later this week.
Given Fernandes’ standing at Sporting, a signing is an expensive task. The Portuguese international is a leader at the club and one of the best footballers in the league. According to the paper, Fernandes is the only player whom Sporting say they are unwilling to sell in the summer. The financially struggling club would be more likely to sell the second-most successful scorer Bas Dost, 29, and left-back Marcos Acuña (27).
The club is seeking to extend Fernandes’ contract, which runs until 2023, for another year. The current contract has an exit clause of 100 million euros, but according to the report, Sporting would still consider a sale with an offer of around € 60m.
Marcel de Almeida, Area Manager Transfermarkt.pt, says: “Sporting is trying to raise the price a bit by saying he is ‘unsellable.’ I expect him to be sold in the summer on an offer starting at 45 million euros.” So far, João Mário (23) is the club’s record departure. In the summer of 2016, the midfielder joined Inter Milan for € 40m.
