Love Island star Georgia Steel’s mystery new beau identified as jailed fraudster

Georgia Steel’s new boyfriend has been identified as convicted fraudster who posed as a Chelsea footballer to fund his lavish lifestyle.

Earlier this week the Love Island star, 21, was seen packing on the PDA with Medi Abalimba, 26 – who was sentenced to four years in prison in 2014 for masquerading as ex Chelsea winger Gael Kakuta.

Speaking to The Sun, Medi, who turned to a life of crime after his £4,000 a week promising football career failed, revealed that Georgia is aware of his criminal history, and even dubbed their fledgling romance as ‘a beauty and the beast story.’

Following her split from Sam Bird last year, Georgia couldn’t have looked happier as she was seen enjoying a romantic stroll with Medi on London’s Bond Street earlier this week and has also reportedly introduced her new beau to her parents.

And since their loved-up sighting, Medi has been revealed to be a broke former footballer who masqueraded as ex Chelsea loanee Kakuta in order to fund a luxury lifestyle of champagne, women, fast cars and shopping sprees.

Speaking of pulling his previous convictions and new relationship together, Medi revealed: ‘I told her everything. She wasn’t judgemental. I don’t want her career affected. We like each other, we are getting on she’s a good girl.

‘It’s a beauty and the beast story. I’m considered a monster, but she doesn’t judge me,’ he revealed before adding that he didn’t know who Georgia was as he was in prison while the show was on.

Speaking of the reality TV star, who he met on a night out, Medi revealed: ‘I’ve apologised to Georgia. I think she wanted to understand how it all went wrong for me. She was shocked. Initially she was concerned for me. She assumed everyone knew except her.’

Medi was once a promising star, earning up to £4,000-a-week and was once sold to Derby County for £1.2million. However, his career bombed after he struggled to recover from an injury.

Unwilling to give up his celebrity life, he began breaking into lockers at the private health club in Camden, where he was a member, in order to steal credit card details.

He would then go on spending sprees in luxury shops, five-star hotels and trendy nightclubs pretending to be Kakuta – who is on his sixth loan spell from Chelsea with Real Vallecano – while using the card details to pay.

He also ran up a £12,000 bill at three luxury London hotels, took a bar in Manchester for another £5,000, scrounged suites in luxury apartment complexes and spent £11,000 on limousines.

Abalimba was caught after he attempted to buy clothing worth more than £20,000 from Selfridge’s at the Trafford Centre near Manchester – even practising his football skills inside while browsing.

After being arrested, he claimed his one-time massive weekly wage left him with a ‘wholly unrealistic’ understanding of money.

Abalimba was born in the Congo and had begun his career as a midfielder in the youth teams of Crystal Palace and Fulham, before moving to Southend United where he was paid £1,000-a-week at just 16 years old.

He attracted attention from several Premier League clubs early in his career and was given trials at Manchester United and Manchester City.

At Liverpool, he played for the reserves while the then manager Rafa Benitez watched from the stands and eventually signed for Derby County in 2009 for £1.2m.

But his career was curtailed by injury and he was sent to Oldham Athletic on a free transfer in January 2011 having failed to make a competitive appearance.

Meanwhile, Georgia and Sam split up shortly after leaving the Love Island villa, yet not before moving in together to their very own love pad.

Last month, The Sun reported that Georgia insinuated she was pressured to stay with her Love Island ex Sam after leaving the villa. She confessed: ‘That is what happens when you come out. I definitely felt like that.

‘It wasn’t working, we were different people, but I really thought, “Oh my God, people are only going to like me if we’re together” because that’s what you’re renowned for.’

And when asked if she had been outright told she had to stay with Sam, Georgia said: ‘I was guided.’

Fans of Love Island will remember Niall, who was couple up with Georgia in the early stages of the show, abruptly left for personal reasons.

The 23-year-old later revealed on his Instagram that he has Asperger Syndrome, a form of autism where a person has difficulty in social relationships and in communicating.
