Five members of the Independent National Electoral commission, INEC’s ad hoc staff deployed for the presidential and National Assembly elections in Osun State were injured in the early hours of Sunday when suspected political thugs launched an attack on them.
The ad hoc staff, including two students of the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile Ife, and three National Youth Service Corps members, were attacked at about 3am in Ijebu Ijesha, Oriade Local Government Council Area of the state when they had retired from the Saturday’s exercise and were trying to sort some of the non sensitive materials deployed for the elections.
According to two of the victims who spoke to journalists on their ordeal, the hoodlums came into the premises of the INEC office and started shooting directly at them in an attack that caught everybody by surprise. They attempted to run for vover but the assailants were bent on carrying out their mission. At the end of the attack, five of them including two females were critically injured and were taken to a private hospital in the town for medical attention.
The attackers also set part of the INEC office ablaze and destroyed two power generating sets in the process.
