“He doesn’t want to renew”
“His contract is still running for a year and he doesn’t want to renew. But he’s playing,” Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said about Ilkay Gündogan (28, photo) recently. Whether the German international is playing salary poker, or a final decision has already been made, Guardiola left undiscussed. According to information from the “Gazzetta dello Sport,” and “Tuttosport,” the midfielder is now high on Inter Milan’s wish list – still he is only the 3rd choice.
Last summer Inter wanted, and were unsuccessful in getting Luka Modric (33) from Real Madrid, and most recently FC Barcelona denied them Ivan Rakitic (31). Gündogan has apparently now been identified by the Milanese as the most financially feasible solution among the top-ranked players in central midfield.
Contracts ending in 2019 & 2020
Focus on central midfielders
Inter is willing to award Gündogan with a four-year contract, and could also provide him a large salary. At ManCity, the ex-Dortmund man is expected to get around € 8m per season. The top earner at Inter is currently Mauro Icardi (26) with an initial salary of 8.5 million euros – the equivalent of 4.5 million net in Italy. It is said that defender Diego Godín (33), who will come from Atlético Madrid in the summer on a free transfer will make the same amount. Meanwhile the “Citizens,” are prepared to let Gündogan leave for between 25 and 30 million euros, if there is a replacement – this sum is attributable to his contract, which is only valid until 2020.
Jatin Dietl, Area Manager for Transfermarkt Italy, says: “To take the next step, Inter needs to reinforce with players who bring experience and a winning mentality. All too often they have failed at crucial moments. Godín is a first step in the right direction. Due to the probably not so high transfer fees, Inter could probably offer Gündogan a salary of around four to five million net plus bonuses.” The money for this transfer, Inter could make with the sale of Ivan Perisic (30), who is likely to move to England.
In addition to Gündogan, players of interest under contract until 2020 include, Blaise Matuidi (32, Juve), Giacomo Bonaventura (29, Milan) and Charles Aránguiz (30, Leverkusen). Already in the summer, midfielders Adrien Rabiot (24, PSG) and Ander Herrera (29, ManUtd) will be free agents.
