Sampdoria boss Marco Giampaolo has confessed that he ‘dreams’ of coaching Barcelona one day.
Barca are a clear influence in Giampaolo’s passing and pressing philosophy, and the 51-year-old admits he would love to work at Camp Nou.
“My desire is to coach Barcelona one day but now I’ve seen everything, I no longer go after certain things,” he told La Stampa.
The former Empoli Coach was then asked about which Samp players could follow in the footsteps of Lucas Torreira and Patrik Schick, Fabio Quagliarella’s rebirth with Italy and Gregoire Defrel after he was caught drink-driving.
“None, otherwise we’ll always be seen as a selling club,” he continued.
“Without retaining players and coaches, you don’t win anything. Quagliarella knows what it means to win, he’s played for big clubs and puts himself at the team’s disposal.
“I told Defrel, ‘call me to take you home next time if you have one too many.’ The same thing could happen to me.
“[Giovanni] Galeone once said that if you drink and win you’re a connoisseur, if you drink and lose you’re an alcoholic.”
Giampaolo’s President is film producer Massimo Ferrero, who is known for his eccentric ways…
“He’s not your usual President, he couldn’t care less about players and technical aspects,” he explained.
“He knows he doesn’t know. Many others don’t know but think they do and that’s when problems arise. He avoids them.”
Finally, what would he like from Ferrero as a present if Samp qualify for the Europa League?
“A boat, so I can get on it every Monday,” he concluded.
