Georginio Wijnaldum reveals there are no talks over new deal yet as he targets double: ‘At a club like Liverpool you have to win everything possible’
- Georginio Wijnaldum has been unsung hero in the heart of Liverpool midfield
- He has seen club work hard to extend contracts of a number of team-mates
- Dutchman admitted: ‘I did not speak with the club yet’, regarding fresh terms
Georginio Wijnaldum revealed there has been no progress over a new Liverpool deal.
A number of his team-mates have had their terms improved with contract extensions over recent months but the Dutchman is still waiting.
Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah, Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane are among the host of first-teamers to have seen their wage increase.
Georginio Wijnaldum has not yet started to negotiate a new contract with Liverpool
But Wijnaldum, so often the unsung hero in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield, is yet to begin talks.
‘No, I did not speak with the club yet,’ Wijnaldum told the Liverpool Echo.
‘That is something for the club. I will see what happens.
‘I signed a five-year contract and I am still under contract. I just do my job to perform. A new contract has to come from the club.’
The midfielder has been a mainstay in Liverpool’s midfield so far this season
A host of Jurgen Klopp’s stars have signed fresh terms and it seems Wijnaldum should be next
There are just over two-and-a-half years remaining on his existing contract, signed after moving for £25million from Newcastle in 2016.
It seems the 28-year-old is untroubled by the lack of movement on a new deal and remains focused on delivering silverware this season.
Following the last-16 Champions League victory over Bayern Munich, he said: ‘We felt what it is to play in a final last season and the journey was great. We want it again.
‘At a club like Liverpool you have to win everything possible and you have to play for both – the Premier League and the Champions League.’
