George Clooney has revealed he gave Ben Affleck some advice on taking on the Batman role: “Don’t do it”.

Clooney played Gotham City’s caped crusader in Joel Schumacher’s 1997 film Batman & Robin, which also starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, and was panned by critics.

The 58-year-old star, whose career recovered from the critical drubbing, told The Hollywood Reporter it changed the way he approached roles.

“Schwarzenegger was paid, I think, 25 million dollars for that, which was like 20 times more than I was paid for it, and, you know, we never even worked together! We worked together one day. But I took all the heat,” he said.

“Now, fair deal; I was playing Batman and I wasn’t good in it, and it wasn’t a good film, but what I learned from that failure was, I had to rethink how I was working. Because now I wasn’t just an actor getting a role, I was being held responsible for the film itself.”

Fifteen years later , the actor joined forces with Affleck to jointly produce the 2012 historical drama Argo.

It meant when Affleck signed up to play the DC superhero in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Clooney was able to offer him some advice based on his own experience playing the Dark Knight.

“I actually did talk to him about it,” Clooney said.

“I said: ‘Don’t do it’. It was only from my experience, which is, you know…”.
