The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday said it would respect the decision of the court regarding whether or not to issue a certificate of return to Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha.

Chairman Information and Voter Education of the Commission, Festus Okoye, stated this while briefing newsmen in Abuja

“As at today, he (Rocahs Okorocha) has taken his case to court. It will be more prudent to wait for the outcome of the matter he has filed in court before we make any further comment,” he said.

Adding that “If at the end of the day, the court makes an order that we (INEC) should give him his certificate of return, the commission will obey such order. If on the other hand, the court takes a different position and makes order consequential orders in relation to the conduct of elections in Imo West, we will also comply with whatsoever the court decides.”

The Commission also said it had release timetable for the resumption and completion of collation of election result in Rivers State.

INEC had on March 10, suspended the election of Rivers state due to widespread disruption of elections and violence in Polling.

From the timetable collation is expected to start April 2 and end April 5, thus giving the people of Rivers state the opportunity to know who their next governor will be.

From the results so far collated, the two leading candidates in the election are Awara Biokpomabo candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), and Nyesom Wike candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

An Abuja Federal High Court had on Wednesday threw out a petition filed by Biokpomabo to halt collation of election result in Rivers.
