Even NBA stars need a little push to get in shape, sometimes.
Prior to the final stretch of the season, Warriors general manager Bob Myers got real with Draymond Green: he told him it was time to get in shape if the team wanted to win another title, according to Marcus Thompson of the The Athletic.
Apparently, however, Green already had a plan in place.
“Yeah, I start this strenuous regimen on March 6,” Green said he told Myers. “It’ll take me like two weeks, maybe like 10 days, to really get to where I need to be.”
The 29-year-old Green had a nutritionist planning – and a chef executing – his meals. His strength and conditioning coaches “had the strategy for him dropping weight while maintaining strength,” Thompson reported.
“I knew I wasn’t in good shape,” Green said after Game 3 against the Clippers. “But I also know if anybody knows how to get in shape and get in shape quick, I know how. I’ve been doing it all my life.”
Because of nagging knee pain and a toe injury, Green’s ability to stay in shape was hindered throughout much of the regular season. So in March, he began a regimen of “healthy eating and taxing workouts.” He cut alcohol, fried foods and unhealthy snacks from his diet.
Six weeks later, he was down 23 pounds.
“He’s definitely eating better,” said Andrew Bogut, Green’s longtime teammate who re-signed with the Warriors for a second stint in early March. “Because he used to eat like sh—.”
