New league record
The impressive transfer of Lucas Hernández (Photo) to Bayern Munich is official. The German club confirmed the signing of the 23-year-old defender, who will move from Atlético Madrid to the Bundesliga in the summer for an € 80m fee – never has a player in Germany had such a high fee. The French World champion has been awarded a contract until 2024. Hernández just beats Virgil van Dijk’s fee of € 78m paid by Liverpool in January 2018.
Atlético stated that the club had offered Hernández the opportunity to extend his contract with the Spaniards, but eventually he opted for the Bayern’s bid. “I’m very happy that we were able to sign one of the best defensive players in the World and a World champion in Lucas Hernández. Lucas can be used as both an central defender or on the left. Also, Lucas will continue our tradition of having outstanding French players strengthen our squad,” said sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.
“This is a very important day in my footballing career. Bayern Munich is one of the best clubs in Europe, and the world. I am proud to be able to fight for all titles for Bayern in the future. I would like to thank Atlético, the management, the coaches, my fellow players and the fans for a wonderful twelve years. Atlético will always remain a part of me. Now I am happy to take the next step at FC Bayern,” said Hernández.

The Marseille-born versatile defender has played at Atlético since he was 11, but is currently missing due to an injury. “During our sports medical examination, we found damage to the inner ligament of the right knee, which needs to be fixed operationally,” said club physician Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, of FC Bayern Munich. “To my knowledge, however, Lucas Hernández will be available to FC Bayern for the Bundesliga 2019/20 squad.”
According to media reports, Hernández will receive a gross salary of 13.5 million euros per season. As a result, he will rise into the ranks of the clubs top earners. Striker Robert Lewandowski (30) is expected to earn € 15m a year, making him earn as much as club icons Thomas Müller (29) and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (32). Hernández will earn just slightly less.
For Munich, it is already the third new signing. Benjamin Pavard (22) from VfB Stuttgart for a 35 million euro fee will also come for the new season. In addition, the German Record champion has secured the services of Jann-Fiete Arp (19) from the second division side Hamburger SV – but he will not join the team until 2020.
