In a couple of days from now the position of Presidents-General of virtually all 179 communities that make up Anambra State will fall due for election.

The positions are filled via election of candidates from various the communities who wish to occupy such exalted positions.

Their activities are regulated by Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU), working in close concert with various traditional institutions in concerned communities.

A distinguished Onitsha indigene, Sir ABC Ekweogwu (KSJI), FICPM, Business, Financial Services and Management professional, who has expressed a desire to run for the top position, has set some goals to achieve if elected on April 20.

The election in Onitsha is set to hold on April 20 by delegates from the various state branches of OIUs

Sir Ekweogwu has among other things vowed to strengthen the Onitsha Improvement Union (OIU) by growing its membership in all nooks and crannies of the community. “I’ll give the union wider exposure,” he said.

Mr Ekweogwu made it clear that he would achieve this objective by creating more awareness through the active participation/involvement of all OIU Branch President’s — home and abroad.

“I hope to sell the idea to a vast majority of Onitsha professionals in various services at home and in The Diaspora.

“My focus will also be on infrastructure development and maintenance of existing ones.

“I will also collaborate with Onitsha North and South Local Government Chairmen and captains of Industries within and outside Onitsha to create employment for our teaming unemployed youths,” he vowed..”

“I will also work to bring back the fading glory of Onitsha by seeking the assistance of well-meaning individuals and Non-governmental organisations to assist in educating every Onitsha child, either through formal or informal school settings in working toward making Onitsha free of dirt, drugs, crime and the like,” Ekweogwu averred.

“I will join others in bringing about peace within and among all Onitsha people at home, residents of the commercial city and those in The Diaspora.

“I will also tap into a break-through in which the Onitsha Monarch, Igwe Nn’emeka Achebe and his cabinet are making through a recent ‘Relationship Corridor’, between Onitsha Town and the city of Indianapolis in the U.S.,” he added.
