‘If I was Hudson-Odoi, I wouldn’t sign’: Jamie Carragher tells Chelsea winger to leverage fact contract is running out to secure more games next season

  • Callum Hudson-Odoi’s contract with Chelsea runs out in the summer of 2020
  • He is attracting interest across Europe but has finally cracked the first-team
  • There are still question marks over whether he will stay with Chelsea

Jamie Carragher has told Callum Hudson-Odoi to avoid signing a new contract with Chelsea and use doubts over his future to secure more first-team football.

Hudson-Odoi started a Premier League game for the first time against Brighton last week and followed it up with another start in the clash with West Ham on Monday.

However it took a senior England cap for Maurizio Sarri to give him a chance, and there are still question marks over whether he will stay with Chelsea.

Bayern Munich made several bids for the 18-year-old in January, while Borussia Dortmund have also been credited with an interest ahead of the summer window.

The winger’s contract runs out in summer 2020 and if he refuses to pen fresh terms, he will be allowed to speak to clubs and sign a pre-contract with overseas sides next January.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher is convinced Hudson-Odoi has to use that to his advantage.

Carragher told Sky Sports: ‘If I was Hudson-Odoi, I wouldn’t sign. He’s in a strong position. I wouldn’t sign to get more money or cause drama. He wants to play and I love the courage he’s show.

‘Youngsters sign big long contracts and you wonder, where the career is going but he’s willing to say, “I want to go”.

‘I would use the last year of my contract as leverage. He wants to play and he wants to show Chelsea what he can do. I’ve got great respect with what this lad is doing.

‘He should play as much next season and if they show him faith, he stays at his boyhood club.’

Gary Neville added: ‘If Bryan Robson said to you “sign your contract”, then as a young boy you would. That was just the way it was all them years ago.

‘He needs to build games in the bank. Having a distraction like a contract over the years you’re learning, does he want fans thinking he’s a money-grabber as well?

‘Chelsea need to give him the stability he needs but let’s say Chelsea play him in only 10 games and he’s allowed to leave let’s say for X million, then he should be entitled to go. He’s got character and personality to stand up to his club.’
