Betis purchase Lo Celso – Transfer gives PSG largest income since Ronaldinho

Purchase option activated

Real Betis has activated its purchase option for Giovani Lo Celso (23, Photo). The central midfielder cost a total of € 25m. He has been contracted until 2023. The Argentine is now the second most expensive signing in club history.

The proceeds are reportedly 22 million euros – according to “Marca,” Betis is said to have acquired only 80 percent of the transfer rights due to the € 3m loan fee paid last summer. Lo Celso second after Denílson (41) for Betis’ most expensive purchase.

In 1998, 31.5 million euros was paid to FC São Paulo for the Brazilian. While Denílson proved to be a transfer flop, Lo Celso is currently the most effective Betis professional, with 15 goals in 40 games. The significantly more expensive Denílson, only scored 12 goals in 162 games for the club.

For PSG, Betis activating the purchase option means a rich transfer profit. The Parisians brought in the Argentina international for € 10m from his youth club CA Rosario in 2016 – he played 54 times and collected 15 scoring points.

The transfer profit made from buying and selling Lo Celso is the biggest from PSG since Ronaldinho (39) departed for Barcelona in 2003. The one-time World Footballer moved from Grêmio to Paris for €5m in 2001, and left for € 32.25m two years later. Grzegorz Krychowiak (29) is another loan player who will probably leave PSG this summer. The Pole has been convincing at Lokomotiv Moscow and is likely to be firmly committed for € 10m. If this deal goes through, however, the French club would take a loss of around 16 million euros.
