The Chicago Bears traded for a new kicker, Eddy Pineiro from the Oakland Raiders.

And to that, the common response is probably … who?

The Bears are trying all available outlets to find a kicker. The group they brought in didn’t stand out over last week’s minicamp, so they cut some and then made the out-of-left-field trade for Pineiro. The Athletic’s Vic Tafur said the Bears will have to ship a 2021 seventh-round pick to Oakland if Pineiro makes the roster.

Pineiro isn’t a complete unknown. You might remember him from Florida, or at least the viral video of him making an 81-yard field goal in practice. But to purely NFL fans, he’s mostly a blank slate.

Eddy Pineiro has never appeared in an NFL game

Not many players who are undrafted free agents get acquired in a trade before playing in an NFL game.

Pineiro declared early for the 2018 draft, wasn’t selected, was added by the Raiders as an undrafted free agent and then spent last season on injured reserve.

The situation couldn’t be better for Pineiro. The Bears cut Cody Parkey after he missed a kick at the end of a playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles last season. They haven’t found an obvious replacement. The Bears clearly like Pineiro if they were willing to trade for him, even at a very low price (this was a much lower level Bears-Raiders than the last time they did business together).

And we know Pineiro has the leg for the job.

Pineiro hit an 81-yard field goal in practice

Pineiro’s most famous football moment was probably this:

That’s ridiculous. Pineiro was fantastic at Florida, hitting 38-of-43 field-goal attempts in his two seasons there. He also was good on kickoffs, and that’ll help the Bears if he makes the team.

Perhaps at some point the Bears will try to acquire an experienced kicker. For now, they’re still experimenting and trying to find the right fit.
