Antoine Griezmann willing to take £6m pay cut to join Barcelona after regretting not leaving Atletico Madrid for the Nou Camp last summer

  • Antoine Griezmann turned down a move to Barcelona despite verbal agreement
  • But forward is now regretting penning £20m annual deal until 2023 last summer
  • Champions League exit and lack of Atletico ambition has seen him seek exit
  • Barcelona could trigger his £100m release clause in summer to land Frenchman

Antoine Griezmann looks more ready than ever to leave Atletico Madrid for Barcelona after becoming concerned with the club’s lack of ambition.

Griezmann surprised many last summer by turning down a move to the Nou Camp in favour of committing his immediate future to Atletico by penning a new deal at the Wanda Metropolitano until 2023.

However, the Frenchman according to Mundo Deportivo now has private regrets over his decision following Atletico’s meek last-16 exit at the hands of Juventus in the Champions League.

Winning European’s elite competition is a target for Griezmann who at 28 is fearful he may never win the tournament at a team whose conservative approach in the transfer market has seen them fall narrowly short on the biggest stage.

Diego Simeone’s side are also on the verge of break up, with Lucas Hernandez already moving to Bayern Munich in the summer while the futures of Diego Godin, Filipe Luis, Saul Niguez and Diego Costa are also uncertain.

Griezmann though would have to take a pay cut to seal a move to Barcelona, who are ready to offer him a £14m (€16m) per year deal – a drop from the £20m (€23m) he is currently on at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Barca are ready to trigger his release clause of £100m in the summer, as they weigh up replacements for the injury prone and ageing Luis Suarez.

Suarez, who has scored 21 goals this term despite his knee problems, has previously admitted that Barca’s search for a replacement as ‘normal’.

Should a fall for Griezmann fall through again, after the forward turned his back on a verbal agreement via a documentary last summer, then the Nou Camp side do have other options.

They are keeping tabs on Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford as well as another rising start in Eintracht Frankfurt’s Luka Jovic.
